What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that causes plaques on and throughout the skin, which can be moderately to severely itchy and have a burning sensation. This disease may also cause sore patches of thick, dry, and discolored skin. The most common affected areas of psoriasis are on the elbows, knees, scalp, back, face, palms and feet. Psoriasis is often asymptomatic, with many patients not realizing that they suffer from dry patches. In severe cases of psoriasis, red, scaly skin may cover the entire body.
What Causes Psoriasis & How is it Treated?
Like many other autoinflammatory diseases, psoriasis occurs when the immune system abnormally attacks healthy skin cells. The underlying cause of this autoimmune reaction remains unknown, psoriasis can be well controlled and treated to manage symptoms.
Mild symptoms of psoriasis are often treated with topical creams, lotions, moisturizers, or localized steroid injections. Severe cases of psoriasis may require oral medications or systemic injections.
