Our Acne Treatment
What is Acne?
Acne, or acne vulgaris, is the chronic or recurrent skin disease in which dead skin cells and oily sebum clog up pores (hair follicles) of the skin which leads to an inflammatory response. Most people are affected for some time during their lives, with acne typically occurring during the onset and peak of puberty.
Acne can appear on the skin as blackheads, whiteheads, red bumps (pimples and zits), pustules, papules, or cysts. This condition is not serious, yet can lead to psychological stress and physical scarring if left untreated.
What Causes Acne?
The American Dermatological Association has determined a variety of factors that are the fundamental causes of acne. From heightened androgen hormones during youth to a genetic predisposition of increased sebaceous (oily) glands, the derivatives of acne can be far and wide. Cosmetics, certain medications, diet, and stress can also lead to the degradation and worsening skin condition of a patient already dealing with acne.
Despite all these factors, the same principle that creates the actual inflammatory response of acne remains the same: the clogging of pores with dead skin cells and sebaceous oils. Once trapped in these follicles, acne vulgaris bacteria can use the oils and dead cells as energy to multiply and cause further inflammation.
When Do You Need a Consultation?
Early signs of acne can be treated through over-the-counter medications. However, for moderate to severe acne, or if treatment methods have not proven effective, it’s best to discuss treatment options with an experienced medical professional.
Your Acne Treatment Consultation
During your visit, we will examine the skin areas affected by acne and assess its severity. We will ask you about all previous medications, remedies, and treatments you have used to attempt to address your acne. We will also look over your medical history.
Based on our findings, we will create an acne treatment plan for you. We will discuss the details of this course of treatment, and we will be happy to answer all questions.
How is Acne Treated?
Since the underlying causes of acne are dead skin cells, sebaceous oils, and the bacteria acne vulgaris itself, mild to moderate acne is treated with over-the-counter topical medications often containing one of four clinically proven active ingredients that removes these dead cells and oils, while killing inflammatory bacteria. These ingredients are:
For more moderate to severe acne, the American Dermatological Association recommends prescription topical antimicrobials, prescription topical retinoids, oral antibiotics, oral contraceptives, or isotretinoin. Anti-inflammatory cortisone injections are sometimes used for persistent, isolated acne lesions. If over-the-counter medications have not worked for you, contact our clinic so that we can help. Placer Dermatology specializes in the treatment of acne and has a multitude of products and solutions to create an effective, individualized plan for you.
Acne Treatment Cost
The cost of your acne treatment will depend on the details of the treatment plan. You might only need to pay for a prescription, or you may need to cover the price of a medical-grade acne treatment.
