Our Scar Revision Treatment
How Do I Get Rid of My Scarring?
Scars are the unfortunate result of injury to the skin. Whether scars are caused by minor injury, chronic skin conditions, surgical incisions, burns, or major trauma, they may cause aesthetic concerns. Depending on their severity and location, some scars may also result in physical discomfort (keloids and hypertrophic scars) or even restricted movement (contractures). Scar revision treatments can help improve the appearance of scars by repositioning scars so that they are less conspicuous, as well as by making the scar tissue look more consistent with the color and texture of the surrounding healthy skin. In some cases, scar revision surgery can also ease discomfort and improve scar flexibility. At Placer Dermatology, we offer a wide range of scar revision options, ranging from simple topical treatments, to minimally invasive therapies, to sophisticated surgical techniques.
Types of Scar Conditions
Scars come in many forms and types. The type of wound and location of the skin damage can influence the scar formation. There are also genetic and health condition factors that can impact the type of scar. Different scars may require different treatments for removal or revision. Our team at Placer Dermatology offers removal and treatment for the following types of scars…
Acne Scars
Everyone has experienced acne at some level. Most people have acne in their teen years, and some have it throughout adulthood. Severe acne can leave behind scars, discoloring or create pockmarked skin. Our medical team at LM Medical NYC includes a board certified dermatologist and a double board certified facial plastic surgeon who can offer advanced options in acne removal.
Scarring occurs when acne lesions are deep in the skin. Usually, scarred acne cannot be controlled by diet or topical medications alone. Deep acne scars do not typically resolve on their own. Acne scars can impact the texture, tone and overall aesthetics of the skin. Even after acne is controlled, the scars left behind can last a lifetime. Fortunately, there are effective methods to fade discoloration and smooth pockmarks left behind by acne. Our providers can recommend treatments and products for acne scar removal to improve the beauty of your skin.
Atrophic Scars
When the skin is wounded and tissue is removed, it can leave an atrophic scar. These scars are indented and pockmarks from chicken pox or acne are examples of atrophic scarring. The wound heals, but not enough tissue is created to restore an even surface. Atrophic scars can leave the skin permanently damaged without treatment.
Most atrophic scars are caused by skin growths or infections. Viruses, moles, acne and other skin conditions can leave behind indented scars once the skin heals. There are different levels of atrophic scarring, from small holes in the skin to boxcar and rolling scars that are larger and deeper. Instead of fading or “removing” atrophic scars, they need to be filled or smoothed by cosmetic treatments or surgery.
