What is Eczema?
Eczema is the term for a group of conditions that cause the skin to become inflamed, itchy, and have rash-like appearances. Symptoms of eczema can range from mild to moderate to severe, and can begin during childhood, adolescence, or adulthood.
Eczema is very common, having some 31 million Americans report the condition every year. This condition is most commonly seen on the face, arms, hands, and feet. Eczema is not contagious.
What Causes Eczema?
There are a multitude of conditions that cause eczema. Some examples are: atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, dyshidrotic eczema, nummular eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, and stasis dermatitis. These conditions may derive from genetic predisposition, abnormal function of the immune system, or environmental factors. Other conditions that cause eczema may derive from a wrong use in skincare technique or using the wrong products for treatment.
How is Eczema Treated?
The majority of people suffering from eczema can successfully manage the disease with sufficient medical treatment and by avoiding irritants. Atopic dermatitis and eczema may be persistent. One may need to try various treatments over many months to control it. Some treatments include over-the-counter medications in the form of topical moisturizers and creams or prescribed oral drugs.
