About Botox/Dysport

What is Botox and how does it work?

Botox is the brand name of a toxin made by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum that has been used for years to treat wrinkles, facial creases, and overall signs of aging in patients. It has the effect of smoothening and softening the appearance of the skin by blocking certain chemical signals from nerves to muscles, temporarily relaxing targeted muscles.

Am I a good candidate?

Healthy patients 18 years old and above without a history of neuromuscular diseases are ideal candidates for Botox treatment. Women who are not pregnant or nursing are good candidates. Patients who are experiencing early signs of skin aging and still have moderate skin elasticity are excellent candidates for Botox treatment.

Patients who are unsatisfied with the results of their regular skincare routine and are looking for an effective solution are ideal candidates.

A Botox treatment is perfect for patients who do not want to undergo invasive surgical procedures to treat their signs of skin aging. Patients who received ideal results from past Botox treatments are the best candidates.

This procedure is not appropriate to treat moderate to severe wrinkles; these are best treated with fillers.

The best candidates are committed to a healthy skincare routine to prolong the effects of Botox treatment. Candidates must have realistic goals.

What to expect during your consultation

During your Botox consultation, we will discuss the benefits of Botox and how it can help achieve your skin-rejuvenation goals. Tell us about your skincare routine, along with any medications or supplements you are currently taking; certain medications and supplements can result in increased post-treatment bruising and must be avoided.

We will evaluate your medical records and examine your treatment areas. We will show you photos of potential results so you can develop realistic expectations from Botox.

Based on our assessment and your goals, we will recommend an ideal treatment plan. We will tell you about the details of Botox treatment to ensure that you are well-prepared for the process. Aftercare instructions and preparation steps will be discussed.

We will discuss the potential cost of the treatment based on the treatment plan. Feel free to raise any concerns so we can address them before finalizing your schedule.

What to expect with Botox

Botox sessions are simple and quick, generally lasting 15 to 30 minutes depending on the areas being treated. Using an ultra-fine needle, our skilled, experienced, and board-certified providers will inject predetermined amounts of Botox into underlying wrinkle-causing facial muscles, leading to relaxation of these targeted muscles. You may experience a slight pinch from Botox injections, and a topical anesthetic may be applied to help increase your comfort. Botox Cosmetic requires minimal downtime, and you can return to your daily activities right after treatment. However, some patients may experience slight bruising or soreness in the injection area.

What is Dysport?

Dysport is another botulinum toxin injectable neuromodulator that gets rid of your fine lines and wrinkles to help you achieve smoother skin. It is approved for the glabellar lines, which are the lines between your eyebrows. It is meant for patients who have moderate or severe glabella lines. Touchups will be needed after about 3 to 6 months similar to the other neuromodulators.

What is aftercare like?

The patient can go home right after their Botox or Dysport treatment. Specific aftercare instructions will be provided, including information regarding when it is appropriate to resume strenuous physical activities.

Similarly to other injectable treatments, minor swelling, redness, and/or discomfort may be experienced after the Botox or Dysport treatment. These issues will be temporary and will fade shortly. It is important to avoid exercising immediately after coming in for your treatment.

Although there is no recovery time required, the patient must avoid putting pressure or heat on the treated area for the first few hours. Massaging the treated area is also prohibited to avoid spreading the Botox or Dysport solution to unwanted areas.

When will I see results?

Botox/Dysport initial results are typically visible within one to two days of treatment, with improvements lasting around three to six months. Treatments are tailored specifically to each patient to achieve the desired results. At Placer Dermatology, our providers promote a subtle, more natural aesthetic. This treatment is temporary, so touch-up appointments every three to six months should be scheduled to maintain your results. For the majority of patients, they experience a smoother, sleeker facial structure and a reduction in the appearance of crow’s feet, frown lines between the brows, forehead line, and more.

How much does a Botox or Dysport treatment cost?

The cost of a Botox or Dysport treatment will vary depending on the specific injectable chosen. The extent of the age signs being treated and the aesthetic goals of the patient can affect the treatment’s price. The amount of Botox used and the number of injections delivered can also play a role in determining cost.
